Why Your Donation Matters
Donations to Habitat for Humanity help deserving families achieve the American Dream of owning their own home. The Rockbridge Area Habitat for Humanity uses donations of money and material, along with volunteer labor, to help our partner families build their own modest but decent homes. The houses built are then sold to our partner families at no profit and financed with affordable, no-interest 20-year mortgages.
Homeownership benefits individuals, families, and society in many ways. Everyone recognizes the value of having safe, decent, and affordable housing for reasons of health, safety, shelter, and security. But homeownership also gives people the wonderful feeling of being independent, self-reliant, and autonomous. Home-owning families experience the pride of ownership and enjoy the feeling of belonging to a community.
Furthermore, homeownership forms the foundation for numerous other positive social and economic benefits, not the least of which is housing stability. According to the report a 2006 study performed by the National Association of Realtors entitled The Social Benefits of Homeownership and Stable Housing, data indicates that “stable housing boosts the educational performance of children, induces higher participation in civic and volunteering activity, improves healthcare outcomes, lowers crime rates, and lessens welfare dependency.”
