Own a
home at a price you can afford
Habitat does not give away free houses. We partner with qualifying families,
who purchase the home at no interest and no profit to Habitat. The families
help build community by participating in the construction of their own home,
and their monthly mortgage payments help fund the construction of future
homes. There are three basic requirements to becoming a Habitat Homeowner:
Need, Ability to Pay, and Willingness to Partner.
Need
- Substandard housing
- Overcrowding
- Unsafe structure
- High rent/income ratio
- Accessibility issues
Ability to Pay
- Stable family income
- Income level between 25% and 60% of HUD Median Income
for Rockbridge County
- Monthly income covers expenses
- Manageable debt
- Ability to pay mortgage averaging between $350 and
$400 a month
Partnership
- Willingness to partner with Habitat
- Willingness to make long-term commitment
- Willingness to contribute 350 hours of sweat equity
for each family member 18 or over
- Willingness to attend homeowner education classes
including budget counseling
If you think you fulfill these requirements, take the next step
by downloading and filling out an application. Or stop by our office at the
rear of the ReSale Store to fill out an application. If you have any
questions, please call Kristina Young at 463-3770 or email us at habitat@rockbridge.net.
